Yes, it happened!
Who would’ve thought that all of this would happen. So, I arrived at a park early in the morning to get a little exercise and practice some basketball drills. showing up early is very important to me so that i don't encounter interruptions. this park had two full basketball courts. Even though they were both full basketball courts, one of them was a little smaller than the other. I was shooting at the free throw line and all of a sudden, about twenty kids entered the park. I was honestly a little bothered. I looked over to the smaller full court and decided to approach the group of kids to ask them if they wanted to take the larger court. They then asked me if i wanted to join them. I didn’t want to play, but thought about it for a second. Practicing basketball without interruptions is important to me, and that is why I go to the park so early. However, I decided to just play basketball with the group of kids.
The adult that was monitoring the kids took off his blazer and told me that the game would consist of a 10 vs 10 match. i was so surprised that i was going to play against him. He was much older than i was, but i later found out while playing against him that he was probably in better shape than i was. I have to admit, that game was one of the best things i have ever done in my entire life. The look on those kids’ faces when they scored the ball. There was this one shy kid that i passed the ball to, who was the smallest kid on the court. He was sort of hiding around the three-point line. he was wide open and i told him to shoot the ball. His peers didn’t seem to have much expectation from him because he was avoiding the ball the whole game. Most of the time if your teammates havent seen you do anything while playing, they will just ignore you, or tell you to pass the ball to them when you have the ball. But I gave him a chance. He shot that ball and it went straight into the hoop. I gave him a high five. After the other team had scored, i brought the ball up the court and found the same kid hiding around the three point line. i told him to shoot and he scored again. He ended up scoring 3 three pointers and you can see his confidence change. Now the other kids noticed his potential as a shooter. We won’t be able to see a kids potential if no one is willing to give a child a try. That was the best, unexpected thing that i will ever experienced. That game caused me to form “Basketball Kids”. I want to give more children that same opportunity. That moment may change his life forever.
