Who would’ve thought!
Who would’ve thought that one unexpected morning at a park would inspire me to create something so meaningful?
I arrived early to work on my basketball skills, just as I always do. I enjoy having a basketball court to myself before the day begins. The park had two full courts, one a little smaller than the other.
As I was shooting free throws, about twenty kids and their coach walked onto the court. At first, I was a little disappointed because I thought my quiet practice was over. I decided to walk over and ask if they wanted the bigger court.
Instead, they asked me, “would you like to join us?”.
I wasn’t planning on playing, but I decided to give up my plans for the day to join them.
The coach explained that we would play a 10-on-10 game. I would lead one team of kids, and he would lead the other. I didn’t think this was a good idea. Although he was much older than I was, he was extremely fit. We laughed, competed, and I actually had an amazing time.
Then something happened that I will never forget.
There was one little boy on my team who was very shy. He was probably the smallest player on the court and spent most of the game standing quietly around the three-point line. The other kids rarely passed him the ball because they didn’t expect much from him.
But I saw something in him. He was on the court and wide open without anyone guarding him. That’s all it took.
I passed him the ball and told him, “shoot it!”
He did, and the ball went straight through the hoop.
The smile on his face was priceless. Later, I found him open again and encouraged him to shoot. He made that one, too. By the end of the game, he had made three three-pointers, and you could see his confidence growing with every shot.
Suddenly, the other kids believed in him because someone had believed in him first.
That day taught me a lesson I’ll never forget:
A child’s potential can remain hidden until someone believes in them.
The unexpected game inspired me to create “Basketball Kids”, a place where every child has the opportunity to build confidence, learn the game, and discover what they are truly capable of.
Because sometimes, all it takes is one moment and one person believing in a child to change a life forever. 🏀
